Abstract
Eye and mouth are involved in the nonverbal communication. How determing
teeth can be, can be soonest recognized when they are lost resulting in an old
man´s face. Actual dental aesthetic is often in spots preached in white and
straight teeth. So the desire for straight white teeth got common.
The aim of our study was to determine the aesthetic consciousness of the
dental professions and non-dental professions.
A total of 214 subjects, 104 without dental professions and 114 with dental
professions participated in this study. They were asked to arrange according to
their subjective aesthetical sensations maxillary models with different teeth
arrangements (without gaps, nested, with gaps), teeth color (B1, A2, A3,5) and
gingival arrangement (smooth, individual) and to evaluate this on the base of
questionnaires. The same task had to be carried out by using only photos of the
same maxillary models.
The majority of the interviewees found it easier to decide from the threedimensional
models than to decide from two dimensional photos. There is a
dependency between the aesthetical awareness of the patients and the level of
previous dental knowledge. Subjects non dental professions preferred the
brightest color and the straights arrangement against the subjects with dental
profession, which favored bright teeth and arrangements without gaps and
nested. Furthermore form, color and teeth arrangement of the interviewees had
no important effect on the aesthetical sensation.
Deductive the desire for dentures which paste well to the rest of the teeth and
are not recognized as dentures is supported. To achieve such aims a good and
intensive communication between dentists, technicians and patients is
necessary. Results of this study point out the preparation of models with the
aimed dentures are a good alternative to show the patient the appearance of
the planed denture before the beginning of dental treatments.
