Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors and one of the leading causes of death in women worldwide, regardless of age. Accordingly, it is essential to identify and confirm factors that influence the overall survival of breast cancer patients. This allows for targeted adjustments to prognosis assessments and therapy optimization for those affected. The aim of the present retrospective study, for which data from 360 patients were evaluated, was to identify and confirm factors that significantly modulate overall survival using various subcohorts. Furthermore, the extent to which the initial disease burden of patients at diagnosis changes over time was to be examined. No clear trends in terms of disease burden could be identified. The diagnosed T, N, and UICC stages remained stable across the defined annual cohorts. Some of the factors identified in the literature, such as the intensity of the IRS score in relation to the estrogen receptor, which appear to significantly influence the overall survival of breast cancer patients, could not be confirmed in this study. This can be explained by the sample size of the study population being too small. Demographic trends in relation to overall survival could not be demonstrated for the study population analyzed. No change in overall survival within the annual cohorts considered was observed over the observation period. An important finding of this study is the confirmation that extensive tumor findings or infestation are associated with significantly poorer overall survival. This applies both to the size of the initial tumor (T category) and to the number of lymph node metastases detected (N category). As a result, a higher UICC stage is also associated with a lower survival rate for patients. Furthermore, it was shown that a higher IRS score for the progesterone receptor is associated with improved overall survival. The present analysis confirms the findings of previous studies on these points of interest and reproduces their results.
