Abstract

Aim of this study was to investigate mothers of children having atopic dermatitis. The survey focused on the personality, the social support and the ailment of the mothers. The results were generated by using standardized and validated questionnaires. The questionnaires that were used were the Gießen-Test , the Fragebogen zur Sozialen Unterstützung , the Sense of Coherence Questionnaire, the Marburger Haut-Fragebogen and the Gießener Beschwerdebogen . There were two groups of mothers having children with atopic eczema: 36 mothers with a healthy skin and 13 mothers having an atopic eczema. One control group consisted of 20 healthy mothers with healthy children and the other covered 14 patients suffering from atopic eczema without children. The evaluation gave evidence to the fact that mothers of children having atopic dermatitis do not differ from control groups. Also a feeling of being less social supported and not having a confidant may occur. Neurotic personality was not verifiable. Therefore the mothers sense of lack of social support should be considered in the therapy of the child. It is highly recommended that both parents take part in the treatment of the disease. Furthermore options of social support to the mother shall be considered.
