Abstract

In this thesis the Amazon photographs taken in the years 1867/68 were examined as an example for the production and circulation of tropical images in the last third of the 19th century. The detailed description of the production, confection and distribution of these early photographs from the Amazon together with the reconstruction of the biographies of the actors involved contributes to the history of photography and to the integration of the visual medium in Anthropology, which has established itself as a science at the same time. The analysis of dealing with these early Amazonas images in scientific and popular contexts makes it clear that in addition to the photographer even more "authors" have significantly contributed to the circulation and re-contextualization of these images. The global trade with photographs already functioning in the late 19th and early 20th century, and the transnational network of photographers, explorers and scientists is visualized in this study. At the same time, the functions and interdependencies of the actors involved in the international transfer of knowledge are clearly recognizable.
