Abstract

Report on the first-time synthesis and characterization of the intermetallic phases of the binary system iridium-zinc and some of the ternary substitutional variants with magnesium. Starting from the elements high-temperature methods were employed to synthesize the alloys. To elucidate their crystal structure X-ray diffraction experiments on single crystals and powders were used, as well as transmission electron microscopy in order to study their real structure. Selected samples were subjected to physical properties measurements (thermal behaviour, magnetism, resistivity). The structural chemistry and the phase relations are discussed, with an emphasis on the classification of the results in terms of structural systematics. Notable results are the occurrence of a two-dimensional incommensurately modulated phase (IrZn3), a phase which shows diffuse scattering in three dimensions (IrZn2), and in general binary phases with a remarkable degree of structural differentiation and complexity in their crystal structures and phase relations.
