Abstract

This empirical study on gender mainstreaming in ver.di, the united service union, shows the contradictory implementation within the everyday work routine of the political secretaries of the union. This situation creates a structural and cultural gender gap. On the basis of interviews and archival analysis the study identifies five central areas of conflict. They document why current trade union practice in ver.di is lead by progress and regress concerning gender equality at the same time. Theoretical approaches used in the study are micropolitics and Joan Ackers concept of the gendered organization.
