Deskriptive Analyse der Expression von Regulatoren der MMP-Funktion: NGAL und RECK in Weichteilsarkomen und deren Einfluss auf die Metastasierung – eine Pilotstudie

Abstract

Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare disease and account for approx. 1% of all malignant diseases in adults and 6% in adolescents. The prognosis of patients with soft tissue sarcomas depends primarily on the histological grade of the tumour and the tumour volume or size. The histological grade of the tumours, which is determined on the basis of cellularity, pleomorphism and mitotic rate of the cells as well as the extent of necrosis, is the most important indicator of the probability of metastasis. However, the assignment to the respective histological grades is not always clearly possible and causes enormous difficulties for the examiners, especially in borderline cases. In addition, tumour grading does not always correlate with the biological behaviour of the tumours. It therefore appears to be of enormous interest to find an independent marker that enables a prognostic assessment of the metastatic potential and thus the survival of patients with soft tissue sarcomas. Previous studies have shown that different modulators of MMP function can influence the invasiveness and metastatic potential of different tumours. The aim of this work is to visualise a possible increased or decreased expression pattern of the modulators NGAL and RECK in the four most common soft tissue sarcoma entities. Subsequently, the extent of expression will be correlated with the clinical outcome in order to finally clarify whether NGAL or RECK can function as independent prognostic markers.
