Abstract

Due to the digitalisation and industrial transformation, optical systems and sensors are required, which work reliably even in for them unsuitable environments. The objective of this dissertation is to expand new areas of application for optical systems by significantly improving their robustness and insensitivity to severe mechanical and thermal environmental influences. This is achieved by developing monolithic and additively manufactured mounting structures with passive mechanical and thermal compensation, which are combined with conventionally manufactured optical elements. For this, different mounting concepts were designed, theoretically analysed, manufactured and experimentally verified. For the mechanical improvement, a monolithic mounting structure is developed that enables precise positioning of several optical elements before and after a mechanical load. This was achieved by integrating spring elements that are elastically deflected by the mounted optical elements and thus create a positioning force equilibrium. The thermal improvement is achieved by placing a mounting structure, which holds all optical elements, in a housing made of a second material with a different coefficient of thermal expansion. Temperature changes cause mechanical stresses that deform the mounting structure. The magnitude of this deformation can be controlled by adjusting the local stiffness and thus the position of the optical elements. The experimental verification using a triplet demonstrated that the monolithic and additively manufactured mounting structure has a positioning accuracy of 6 μm before and after a mechanical shock of 15 G. In addition, athermalization reduced the resulting expansion and contraction effects from (108±3) μm to (−0,60±0,90) μm over a temperature range of 5 ◦C to 35 ◦C. The results of this work show that the developed monolithic mounting concepts significantly improve the robustness of optical systems. They introduce new opportunities to use said systems in demanding environments and support the development of sophisticated optical precision instruments.
