Abstract
Covid-19, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2, represented a novel disease in 2019 and led to a global pandemic. Many patients report persistent symptoms after having been infected and suffer from post-Covid-19. The spectrum of symptoms is diverse, ranging from respiratory issues to chronic fatigue.
In the present retrospective monocentric cross-sectional study, a total of 240 patients participated after having experienced Covid-19. The majority of patients reported persistent symptoms at the time of the examination and were treated on an outpatient basis during the acute phase of the infection. In addition to a detailed anamnesis that included standardized questionnaires, a personal examination took place with a thorough physical and instrumental examination (blood gas analysis, blood sampling, lung function test, ergometry, pulse oximetry, blood pressure measurement).
The present paper primarily focused on the interrelation between the severity of respiratory symptoms (including cough, dyspnea and rhinitis) during the acute phase of the illness and post-Covid-19. The severity of respiratory symptoms was categorized using SPSS software for the points in time before, during and after the infection, based on tertiles divided into three groups (e.g. mild, moderate, severe cough). In each group, the arithmetic mean of symptom severity was determined.
By sorting according to the respective subgroup, the interrelation between the symptoms during the acute phase and the symptoms at the time of examination could be clarified. In the characterization of subgroup features, an initial investigation was conducted to
determine the extent to which the severity of respiratory symptoms was associated with the examined parameters. In this context, the symptom of dyspnea stood out with numerous significant results between the subgroups, distinguishing it from the symptoms of cough and rhinitis.
The statistical testing revealed a highly significant association (p < 0,001) between the symptoms of cough, dyspnea, and rhinitis during the acute phase and the time of the examination (post-Covid-19). The stronger the respective symptom was reported by the participants of the study during the acute phase of illness, the more pronounced the patient complained about its severity at the time of the examination. Thus, it could be concluded from the available data that the respiratory symptom severity during the acute phase had a significant impact on the respiratory symptom expression post-Covid-19.
