The work describes the synthesis of discotic liquid crystals. Correspondig monomers and polymer systems (side chain homopolymers and block copolymers) were synthesized. The effect of cylindrical nanoscaled confinement on liquid crystalline monomers and polymer systems has been investigated. Specially the effect on mesophase structure was studied through X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Parameters such as temperature, composition, size and surface of the confinement were systematically varied. Block copolymer microphase separation was investigated by transmission electron microscope.
