Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine more sophisticated results of the in vivo effect of cimetidine on tumor growth and angiogenesis after inoculation of human pancreatic cancer xenografts into immunodeficient (SCID) mice. In addition, we have been implemented a functional monitoring for investigation of tumor tissue perfusion and vascularization as well as in vivo volumetric analysis of tumors. The digital volumetric analysis has been compared with two classical manual methods of volumetric tumor calculations. Therefore we built a more sophisticated formula to determinate the volume of xenografts, using easily a vernier caliber. We showed a mean underestimation of the classical caliber method compared with the volumetric results of the IWT software. Furthermore there was a larger deviation for larger tumor volumes. The evaluation of our second caliber method, which using a more sophisticated formula for volume calculations, shows good agreement to the IWT software. The dynamic MRI images vizualized the poorer blood perfusion in tumor with cimetidine therapy.
