Abstract
Sleep disorders are assuming ever greater importance in the field of Internal Medicine.
Numerous scientific publications deal with the impact and importance of sleep on the normal physiology of a healthy organism. It is, therefore, to be expected that any malfunction in the system through sleep disorders should greatly affect the physiology and pathophysiology of patients. The connections and interactions of sleep related disorders with certain medical conditions have been shown conclusively. It thus stands to reason that diagnosis and subsequent treatment of such factors has a positive impact on quality of life and equally on morbidity.
This is the basic for this dissertation. Many patients initially consult their general practitioner who, in his capacity as primary medical guide and advisor, examines patients, and, should he see reason for further exploration, refers them to a specialist.
Appropriate diagnostic tools are, therefore, a necessity when endeavouring to arrive at a diagnosis. The data were gained through a step-by-step diagnostic approach.
Questionnaires were given to a random group of patients, evaluated, and where
unusual features respiratory disorders. Where disorders were suspected as a result of the screening process, patients were referred to a medical institute specialising in sleep related problems. There a cardio-respiratory polysomnography was carried out.
The prevalence of sleep related respiratory disorders, as found in a rural general practice in the sample of patients investigated here, is in the order of 5,4%, 8,6 % for men, 2,2% for women.
Men are four times more likely than women to experience sleep disorders. Taking into account the patients sex, age and their body mass index, one is left with a set of independent variables which clearly point to the likelihood of a sleep related respiratory disorder occurring, without any need for further investigation. The most significant factor is body weight, followed by the sex of the patients and their age. The general practitioner is well advised to continue to focus on sleep related disorders.
