This dissertation deals with the dramaturgy of the party conference of the SPD in Hamburg in 1897. It illustrates the phases of preparation and organization, the built-up of emotions and expectations with the help of the symbols and songs of the labour movement in the welcome ceremony, dramatic moments during the party conference negotiations, evening meetings with speeches, and the climax, the triumphal cruise of the party leadership on the river Elbe cheered on by the dockers, as well as the finale after the end of the official part of the conference.
