Abstract

Background: Patients with Parkinsons disease (PD) seem to act more disorderly in everyday clinical practice, which leads to the chaos theory of whether the clinically evident, changed orderly behavior in patients with PD is a symptom of this disease. Therefore, the aim of the present study was the investigation of a changed order behavior in patients with PD with special consideration of different influencing factors, such as a dysexecutive syndrome. Methods: For this pilot study the data of twenty-one patients with PD, seventeen of their relatives and a control group consisting of twenty-two participants without the diagnosis PD has been analyzed. The PD patients and the control group were matched for age and underwent neuropsychological testing, focusing on testing of executive functions. One of the main aspects was the photographed breakfast tray, which was then rated by three healthy raters to assess the orderly behavior of the participants. Results: The study results showed that patients with PD had a statistically significantly worse organizational behavior than the examined control group (p = 0.005). The organizational behavior was significantly influenced by executive functions and disease severity. Conclusion: A reduced orderly behavior in patients with PD emerges as a non-motor symptom. A more advanced stage of the disease and a dysexecutive syndrome predicts the criterion of order behavior in a statistically significant manner. Besides that, patients with PD exhibit a reduced conscientiousness, which has a negative effect on the quality of life and is often accompanied by depression. A therapeutic approach should be seen in this context.
