Abstract

The multicore biopsy is very sufficient to sensitively diagnose cancer of the prostate, it offers high predictive value for location, extension and grading of prostate cancer. Therefore the multicore biopsy of the prostate represents the compulsory basis of optimal treatment in prostate cancer. In our investigation we confirm that the procedure of periprostatic nerve block is quick and easy to perform with a time requierement of 5 minutes. It does not impair sensitivity of the biopsy procedure. The additional costs of the procedure are substantial. They vary between 20 and 25 Euro depending on the amount of local anasthetic and the cost for the fine needle. Local anaesthesia periprostatic nerve block is described as the standard approach for pain control during biopsy [84]. A significant role in reaching those good results has to be attributed to the use of the vaginal ultrasound scanner with a side-firing biopsy guidance attached to the scanner. Due to the geometry of the vaginal scanner, it was possible to receive an exact display of the anatomical region of the prostate gland and collect samples of peripherical regions using the transversal image. A sufficient biopsy technique is the basis for optimal therapy in prostate cancer and improves the acceptance ot the patient.
