Abstract

In the 1990s, green biotechnology applications were first commercialized successfully. Since then the global industry structure of plant breeding has changed, a development which has garnered increasing attention. The present paper analyzes a possible paradigm shift in plant breeding by scrutinizing competences of leading seed companies from 1975 to 2011. Patent applications in Europe and a complete survey of registered seeds from The Common Catalogue of Varieties of Agricultural Plant Species serve as indicators for technological/breeding competences of the companies.
