The vibrator appears as a vibrating dildo in Germany in 1969. The present work describes its reception and relevance in the FRG and GDR at this time as well as its prehistory, creating the basis as a richly illustrated object history for further research. Starting with the first electromechanical vibrating massage devices, through the discourses on frigidity, hysteria or impotence to gender-neutral sex toys of our time, this work also deals with his product-technical further developments and current discourses. Practices, knowledge of the sexual body, invisible rules in interpersonal interactions and their presence in the media are examined. Contemporary witnesses from the FRG and GDR have their say, as well as actors from the women's movement or research.
