Abstract

Professionalism is an issue of persistent attractiveness for the field of education in general and for adult education in particular. However, the dissertation at hand is based on the thesis that the research on professionalism has recently entered a crisis that requires alternative analytical approaches to the phenomenon of pedagogical professionalism. On the basis of Pierre Bourdieu’s practice theory, it develops an approach of relational professionalism which consistently comprehends it as a relational social phenomenon and, at the same time, highlights it as an always controversial and practically contested concept within professional fields. This approach is being used for a multi-method empirical investigation of the institutionalization of pedagogical practice forms in the field of start-up counseling. Although this field is characterized by a great heterogeneity of pedagogical practice forms at first sight, by applying the relational professionalism approach, they can be attributed to positional defined relationships between habitual structures of the consultants and institutionalized structures of the field. Finally, those conflict lines can be elaborated empirically which not only organize the pedagogical practices within the field but also determine the struggle about their legitimate form.
