Parteimitgliedschaft in der digitalen Demokratie

Abstract

In light of the advancing digitalisation and certainly since the COVID-19 pandemic, digital member participation has become a relevant instrument for political parties (Vittori & Barberà, 2023; Ziegler, Borucki & Weissenbach, 2024). Nevertheless, the "digital party", that continously involves its members through direct-democratic procedures has not evolved to be the ideal model of party organisation (Mompó & Barberà, 2025; Raniolo, Tarditi & Vittori, 2021). The extent to which digital tools are adopted by parties and how their introduction transforms existing structures of participation must be negotiated within the party organisations. This cumulative dissertation examines how party members perceive the digital transformation, how members participate in these processes, and which barriers emerge in the course of adaptation. The dissertation draws primarily on surveys of party members and thus adopts a bottom-up perspective on party organisations undergoing digital transformation. Through the systematic analysis of attitudes and opinions at the grassroots level, insights have now been gained into the extent to which party members support reforms aimed at member integration, thereby revealing potential sources of conflict.
