Abstract

The concept of "Mündigkeit" (autonomy) has played a central role in the development of educational theories since the Enlightenment. This cumulative dissertation examines the extent to which this classic pedagogical motif can be made fruitful as a theoretical perspective for open child and youth work. On the one hand, the research interest is linked to the observation that related terms and concepts have been developed and discussed in the variety of theoretical concepts of open child and youth work, e.g. democracy education, participation or self-determination in girls' work, but that "Mündigkeit" itself plays a marginal role in the specialist discourse. Although the term is referred to as a target perspective, "Mündigkeit" as a concept is neither explicitly discussed nor are the associated contradictions addressed. This seems surprising if open child and youth work is understood as a central space of (democracy- and subject-oriented) education. The dissertation incorporates socio-critical and self-critical (social) educational theories that take into account the tensions and inherent contradictions embedded in the concept of “Mündigkeit“ and allow to examine them in their complexity. In this context, difference-sensitive, power-critical and intersectional perspectives are taken up, as they have already been partially developed in the (social) educational discourse on "Mündigkeit". "Mündigkeit" conceived in solidarity in this way can be understood as an ambiguous orientation and thus, as a concept for analysis and reflection, contributing to a more differentiated perception of and dealing with marginalization.
