Abstract

The paper titled "Routine phrases in German and Iraqi Arabic" deals with the analysis of formulistic expressions. The subject matters in the present analysis are several routine phrases in German and Iraq-Arabic which possess the characteristic of being used frequently in everyday conversation. The selected groups of routine phrases are the phrases to apologize, to thank, to request, to compliment, to introduce s.o., to greet and to say goodbye, as well as the phrases used to reply to the above mentioned formulas. The present analysis also looks into the speech acts which are expressed by the routine formulas. To make it easier for language learners to pick up formulaic expressions of this type, this study aims to compare the formulaic phrases of the target language to those in the source language, and to assign set phrases in the target language to set phrases in the source language as functional equivalents. In this paper the analysis of the routine phrases, and the speech acts by which the routine phrases are expressed, takes place on the basis of an empirical study.
