Abstract

At the orthopaedic department of the St. Elizabeth's Hospital each year approximately 30 children with flat feet (pes planovalgus) are treated surgically. The clinic can thus draw on a large pool of patients and is highly experienced in the treatment of planovalgus feet. Since July 2003, a minimally invasive surgical technique, the so-called arthroereisis with a screw-type implant (Kalix® implant, Newdeal, Leone, France) is used to treat the juvenile pes planovalgus. In the following five years a total number of 105 pes planovalgus surgeries on 60 patients were performed using the arthroereisis procedure with the Kalix® implant. In the present study, the preoperative clinical and radiological findings, the surgery, the course of inpatient treatments, and the postoperative clinical and radiological findings, including postoperative complications and complaints are evaluated and compared with published results obtained with the arthroereisis on children with flatfoot deformity. The findings of this study are also compared with clinical data obtained with alternative surgical techniques. The evaluation of the radiographs is performed by comparing known and accepted angle measurements on standard radiographs using the recently by Prof. J. Hamel (Hamel et al., 2006) developed talo-metatarsal index. The overall aim of this study is to illustrate the therapeutic outcome and possible complications after surgical treatment of children's flat feet with the Kalix implant. In addition, the study will provide objective clinical and radiological parameters that can be useful in the assessment and diagnosis of a conservative or surgical treatment of the paediatric foot deformities.
