Root canal therapy is an urgent action when it comes to irreversible pulpitis. The canal gets drilled out, cleaned by solutions, disinfected and sealed with a root canal cement and gutta-percha point. That way, no fluids or bacteria can break through into the canal. Furthermore, the sealer can compensate little irregularities in the wall of the root canal and close up any side canals. It also acts as a link element between the gutta-percha point and the root dentin.
The sealer Apexit Plus by Ivoclar Vivadent is based on a calciumsalicylate and, according to the manufacturer, can also be used for techniques with warm gutta-percha. The advantage of a warm obturation technique is that irregu- larities can be coated better as with the more popular cold obturation techniques. However, in case the quality of Apexit Plus might be compromised by high temperature, it might cause leakage and could potentially result in a periradicular infection.
Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the efficiency of the root canal cement Apexit Plus at different temperatures to measure the impact on the bond strength when performing warm obturation techniques.
The results showed that the material property and bond strenght of Apexit Plus isn’t negatively affected by higher temperatures. Therefore, the sealer is suit- able for dental procedures with warm materials as well.
