Abstract

Experiential education is known as a versatile, if not holistic, approach outside of traditional teaching and learning spaces. The aim is to work on a physical, emotional and mental level. However, the spiritual level has so far found little space in experiential education. This master's thesis examined the extent to which meditation as a spiritual technique can play a role in experiential education. As the phenomenon of meditation is very diverse and complex, the considerations were based on Vipassana meditation as taught by S. N. Goenka. The question of whether Vipassana meditation fits in with the approach of experiential education and what possibilities and limitations arise in the connection is investigated. For this purpose, central characteristics and goals of experiential education are compared with aspects, possible effects and experiences in meditation in general as well as the technique and basic premises of Vipassana. This shows that on a theoretical level there are sufficient connecting factors between Vipassana meditation and experiential education. This is because meditation can in itself offer an opportunity to initiate educational processes and thus provide a suitable complement to the otherwise more physically active and socially demanding situations in experiential education. When confronted with the practical work, however, it becomes clear that Vipassana is too complex to be implemented in an authentic pure form. Taking into account the topic of cultural appropriation, meditation techniques based on Vipassana would have to be found. For example could meditation experiences based on the Vipassana-like perception of one's own breath and body help to develop mindfulness, self-reflection and inner peace.
