Abstract

This article focuses on the development of language awareness in science-based education courses designed for pre-service teacher students. As language isn’t just the key to gathering information but also to understanding scientific concepts, pre-service teacher education must take into account both the general language ability and the subject-specific language use. Moreover, due to the growing linguistic heterogeneity in German classrooms, future teachers need to develop profound knowledge and skills to promote their future students’ Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) and scientific literacy. Against this background, different levels and meanings of language use in science lessons will be presented. As a case in point, some examples on working with diagrams by applying language-sensitive methods will be outlined.
