Abstract

Argumentation is a procedure which aims to settle a controversial issue in a non-violent way by a rational and cooperative communicative exchange. In combining descriptive and prescriptive approaches of argumentation theory we developed 11 standards of fair argumentation which characterize an ideal speech situation of an ideology-free dialogue. Violations of these standards can be observed regularly in the political debate by right wing populist actors. The negative impact of these violations on social peace (exemplified drastically by the Presidency of D. Trump) illustrates that fairness in argumentation can constitute a bulwark against discord and a basis for peacekeeping and democracy.
