Emotionen in Intergruppenkonflikten: Generelle Prozesse und die besondere Rolle von Hass und Wut

Abstract

What roles do emotions play in conflicts? We address this question in this chapter. Emotions are important for understanding conflicts because emotions are important motivators for people's behaviour and thus also for their actions in intergroup conflicts, i.e. conflicts between social groups (as opposed to conflicts between individuals). We first explain what emotions are and then refer to the role that emotions play in intergroup relationships. We then describe the specific origins and effects of intergroup conflict for two emotions in more detail: hate and anger. We look at what characterises these emotions and how they can play out in conflicts. While hate as an absolute, extreme emotion is particularly destructive, anger can intensify conflicts, but also ensure that people stand up more strongly for their own group.
