In the framework of a positive understanding of peace, poverty and inequality are considered as forms of structural violence that have a negative impact on peaceful coexistence and human development. Consequently, overcoming poverty, hunger and extreme inequality on a global level is necessary to achieve social peace and to sustain it in the long term. In this chapter, we will first take a closer look at the phenomena of poverty and economic inequality from a peace psychology perspective and discuss their impacts at the individual and societal levels. At the end of this chapter, the question of why poverty and inequality persist in many societies and what options can contribute to overcoming them will also be addressed.
