In this article, Hartmut Esser’s “model of sociological explanation” will be put into practice in the context of classroom discourse analysis. By referring to the transcript of a discourse sequence, we will outline the first steps of the “model of sociological explanation”. The aim is to exemplify the diagnostic potential of explanatory competencies, which teachers rely on in their daily classroom routines and which therefore should be subject to special training.
