Abstract

In the integration debate taken place in Germany, the concept of Leitkultur is significant. This political debate is based on the intention to define a general principle about the German Leitkultur, which guides the coexistence of the multiple cultures represented in Germany. Even today, 16 years after its first appearance, the controversial issue of the Leitkulturdebatte is still very conflict-laden and characterized by more dissent than consensus. This online publication provides a chronological overview of the course of this debate by means of a media analysis. The subsequent interpretation comes to the conclusion that the Leitkulturdebatte is primarily concerned with the determination of a German identity and its essence.
